OUR STORY

It started with a cup
of coffee beans.

Getye Mekuria was in sixth grade when he began selling coffee in Siz. With money earned from selling butter, he bought raw beans from farmers and sold them at the Tuesday and Saturday markets, measuring each portion with a sini, a small Ethiopian coffee cup.

Over more than 30 years, coffee became his livelihood. Starting his own coffee export company was something he had long wanted to do. In 2024, he founded Siz Trading, naming it after the town where he sold his first beans.

Today, we carry that work forward as a family, with our farm in Bahta and our office in Addis Ababa.

The meaning of Siz

WHERE WE BEGAN

A place to settle.
A beginning to remember.

In the story passed down in our family, Siz means Marefiya, a place to settle. People arrived from different regions of Ethiopia. Some rested for a while. Others stayed and made a home.

For our father, Siz is where his work in coffee began. Giving the company that name was a way of remembering his beginnings as he took the next step.

He believes that knowing where you started helps you understand where you are going. That belief stays with us as Siz Trading grows.
